Humility is the quality or attitude
of being modest, thinking lowly of oneself and not being proud or arrogant.
This is quite different from having a low self-esteem. Jesus Christ set an example of humility for Christians
to follow – this is the point of Paul’s teaching on humility. Peter focuses on how humility should be the guiding principle in inter-personal relationships.
Paul’s
teaching on Humility (Philippians 2:1-11)
In his letter to the Philippians,
Paul appealed to his audience to be of one mind (united) in all that they do,
and to love each other. To ensure that they are united, he advised them not to
do anything out of selfishness.
Paul,
in order to illustrate fully the meaning and nature of humility, explained that
Jesus Christ, who was God, relinquished his place to take the form of a man – a
servant, when he was on earth. Jesus Christ did not just take human form, but
humbled himself to die on the cross for the sins of man. As a result of this
action, God exalted him so that at the mention of his name, every knee shall
bow, in heaven, on earth, and beneath the earth; and every tongue confess that
Jesus is Lord.
Peter’s
teaching on Humility (1 Peter 5:5-11)
In the first letter of Peter, young
Christians were instructed to be subject to elders- that they “clothe”
themselves in humility in their relation with one another. Those who are humble
are gifted with the grace of God while those who exhibited pride receive God’s
opposition. In other words, those who humble themselves are exalted, while the
proud are humbled by God (i.e. humiliated).
Finally, Peter urged Christians to
cast all their anxieties on God who cares for them and to always be watchful (ready)
to combat the actions of the devil, their enemy.
Significance
of the Teachings on Humility
1. Leaders
in churches should cultivate the attitude of humility by showing good example
to their followers.
2. Humility
prepares Christians to receive promotion from God.
3. Christians
extend the work of Christ by living in harmony and showing respect to one
another.
4. The
acceptance of Jesus to come into the world, take human form, and to die on the
cross for the sake of man, is the height of humility. Therefore, Christians
should live sacrificial lives.
